Features

THINGS THAT WENT CLANK IN THE NIGHT
Freight trains - we always knew they were there, we would hear them rumbling and clanking by in the middle of the night. The engines which pulled them didn?t, by and large, have names or 6ft 8in driving wheels, but huge numbers of them were built. In fact they were the most common of all locomotive types - the 0-6-0, and latterly, as trains became heavier, 0-8-0, 2-8-0 and 2-10-0 goods engines. Dave Wilson recounts the history of the humble goods engine and how they still find useful employment today.

62 WET AND WINDY: THE MARQUESS TO MALLAIG
Preserved British steam locomotives are now far more widely travelled than they ever were in ?real? steam days, particularly those with main line certificates. In fact some engines rarely go anywhere near the lines they were designed for. Occasionally though an engine returns home, to its own metals. Brian Sharpe reports on a relatively rare visit of a Scottish favourite to its one-time home turf.

66 SANTA?S SPECIAL JOURNEY
The Santa special season is crucial to the finances of many heritage lines. Peter Brown reports from one of the pioneer railways which is now entertaining grandparents who first travelled on the line when they were children themselves.
